In 2025, FybrHaus was approached by an interior architect to design and produce a collection of bespoke tufted works for a Zambian architectural project still in the early stages of its construction. Over the course of six weeks, we created 28 tufted works, each serving as a unique piece of art within the larger collection.

The initial brief given by the client was an ‘Afrocentric’ colour palette. Building around the key shade of terracotta, we played with shade, value, and contrast using a range of creams and browns. Specially selected by founder Sheriffah Arewa was the inclusion of a vivid blue motif throughout, which created balance by breaking up the warm tones with complementary shades.

To elevate the Afrocentric feel of the collection, we discarded harsh lines and sharp angles in favour of freeform, organic shapes, while varying pile heights produced an almost sculptural effect.

The unique marbled designs innovated for the Zambia commission have since been an enduring presence in FybrHaus pieces. The collection produced for the commission served as the very first installation of our now-characteristic ‘Liquid Rugs’.

A variety of rug sizes were explored in the collection, from ‘scatters’ (cushions) to massive wall pieces designed to complement the high ceilings of the double-volume rooms. For the largest pieces, we outsourced bespoke three-by-three metre frames from the renowned Candice Berman Fine Art Gallery.

The colour story and visual language calls to mind Zambia’s rolling Miombo grasslands and the life-sustaining flow of the Zambezi River, bringing a microcosm of the country’s most striking features into the home.
